Gastronomic Tour

This is a walking city tour that will introduce participants to the wonderful, colorful, aromatic array of ingredients used in the typical cuisine of Maranhao as we visit São Luiz's markets.
Our first stop is the Mercado de Peixe, the fish market, where you will be amazed by the variety of ocean-fresh fish and shellfish. Here we will have a chance to sample many delicacies from the sea including fish (pescada amarela, peixe-pedra, gurijuba, and tainha), shrimp (camarão), crab (caranguejo), sururu and many more.

You will also go on to the bustling Mercado Central, the Central Market to taste the tropical fruits of the region such as juçara, bacuri, cupuaçu, pitomba, seriguela, caju (cashew), manga (mango) and acerola.

After this, the tour will head towards Mercado das Tulhas, the Granary Market, an old market located in the historical centre of São Luis, where the participants can buy chestnuts, tiquira (a drink made from cassava), various flours, seasonings, and dry goods, and all kinds of sweets.

Finally, we will stop for a typical Maranhense lunch at the Senac School Restaurant. Lunch is included in the cost of the tour.

São Luiz has only one season - summer, divided into hot and dry summer from July to December, and hot and rainy summer from January to June. The months with a higher incidence of rain are March and April. The average temperature is 31° C.
